클리어리, Quinn Emanuel, Ropes & Gray 등 주목
매년 기업법무를 수행하는 전 세계 로펌과 기업 변호사들의 경쟁력을 조사해 나라별로 리그테이블을 발표하는 법률평가매체 체임버스앤파트너스(Chambers and Partners)가 최근 금융(Banking and Finance) 분야부터 TMT(Technology, Media, Telecoms) 분야까지 모두 19개 분야에 걸쳐 한국 로펌들의 경쟁력을 평가한 'Chambers Asia-Pacific 2024년판'을 배포했다.
김앤장이 'Shipping: Finance'를 제외한 18개 분야에서 Band 1에 선정되는 등 메이저 로펌들이 리그테이블을 주도하는 가운데 부티크 로펌 중에선 국제중재에 특화한 법무법인 피터앤김이 유일하게 'Dispute Resolution: Arbitration' 분야에서 김앤장과 함께 Band 1에 선정되며 두각을 보였다. 국제중재 부티크 중 한 곳으로 얼마전 Baker McKenzie와 JV를 출범시킨 법무법인 KL 파트너스는 해당 분야에서 Band 4에 랭크되었다.
IP(Intellectual Property) 분야도 부티크가 발달한 분야로, Cho & Partners와 Lee International IP & Law Group이 법무법인 지평과 함께 Band 4에 선정되었다. 또 해상(Shipping) 분야의 경우 법무법인 세경, 해윤, 선율이 법무법인 지평, 화우와 함께 Band 3에, 오로라, 지현, 청해, 정동국제가 Band 4에 선정되었으나, 체임버스는 한국의 부티크 펌들에 대한 평가에 인색한 편이다.
한국시장에서 활동하는 외국 로펌 평가에선 한진덕 미국변호사가 서울사무소를 이끌고 있는 Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton이 Capital Markets과 Corporate/M&A 분야에서 단독으로 Band 1의 평가를 받으며 뛰어난 경쟁력을 다시 한 번 확인받았다. 이어 Capital Markets의 경우 Linklaters와 Paul Hastings가 Band 2로 뒤를 쫒고 있으며, Corporate/M&A 분야에선 Ropes & Gray, Skadden, O'Melveny & Myers가 Band 2를 구성했다.
최근 국제분쟁이 늘어나고 있는 'Dispute Resolution' 분야도 외국 로펌들이 활발하게 활동하는 분야로, 지난해 서울에서 철수한 Herbert Smith Freehills와 홍콩사무소의 존 리 대표가 한국팀을 이끌고 있는 Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan이 나란히 Band 1의 평가를 받았다. 두 로펌 모두 서울사무소를 운영하지 않고 있다. 또 Clifford Chance, DLA Piper, White & Case, Arnold & Porter가 Band 2에 선정되었으며, 미 연방검사 출신 변호사가 서울사무소에 상주하는 Kobre & Kim은 Clyde & Co, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer, Mayer Brown PK Wong & Nair Pte. Ltd.와 함께 Band 3에 랭크되었다.
IP 분야에선 Covington & Burling과 Ropes & Gray가 나란히 Band 1에 올랐다. 또 'Energy & Natural Resources' 분야에선 이원 미국변호사가 활약하는 Baker McKenzie가 유일하게 Band 1에 선정되었으며, 'Projects & Infrastructure' 분야에선 Allen & Overy, Linklaters, Milbank 세 곳이 Band 1을 형성했다.
