한국에서 활동하는 로펌들을 평가하는 여러 이벤트 가운데 'ALB Korea Law Awards'는 한국에 직접 와서 당일 최종 결과를 발표하며 시상식을 진행하는 것으로 유명하다. 아시아의 법률매체인 ALB가 다섯 번째로 진행한 'ALB Korea Law Awards 2017' 시상식이 11월 16일 서울 남산의 그랜드 하얏트호텔에서 열렸다.
올 평가에 참여한 평가위원(Judges)은 모두 32명. 특히 인하우스 변호사들이 평가위원으로 많이 참여한 것이 올 평가의 특징으로, 인하우스카운슬포럼(IHCF)의 동영철 회장과 한국사내변호사회(KICA)의 이병화 회장도 평가단의 일원으로 참여했다.
로펌과 딜 평가로 나눠 모두 34개 분야에서 이루어진 시상에서 김앤장 법률사무소가 ▲금융(Banking and Financial Services) ▲사모펀드(Private Equity) ▲프로젝트, 에너지, 인프라(Projects, Energy and Infrastructure) ▲규제와 컴플라이언스(Regulatory and Compliance) ▲딜(Deal) 분야의 '올해의 로펌(Law Firm of the Year)' 선정에 이어 '올해의 한국 로펌(Korea Law Firm of the Year)'으로 선정됐다.
김앤장은 또 '올해의 부동산딜(Real Estate Deal of the Year)'로 선정된 Brookfield Asset Management에 의한 IFC Seoul 인수에 관여하고, ▲Debt Market Deal of the Year ▲M&A Deal of the Year ▲Projects, Energy and Infrastructure Deal of the Year 등도 수상, 모두 10개 분야에서 상을 받은 결과가 됐다.
이어 법무법인 태평양이 해외업무(Overseas Practice), 국제중재(International Arbitration) 분야에서 '올해의 로펌'으로 선정되었으며, 삼성바이오로직스와 두산밥캣, 셀트리온헬스케어 IPO 등 여러 굵직한 IPO 거래에 자문하며 활약한 태평양의 신희강 변호사는 '올해의 딜메이커(Dealmaker of the Year)'로 선정됐다.
태평양은 '올해의 에쿼티 마켓딜(Equity Market Deal of the Year)'과 '올해의 TMT딜(Technology, Media and Telecommunications Deal of the Year)', '올해의 한국딜(Korea Deal of the Year)'로 선정된 삼성바이오로직스 IPO에 관여해 모두 6개 분야에서 상을 받았다.
또 광장이 건설과 부동산(Construction and Real Estate) 분야와 한국 IP 분야(Korea Intellectual Property)에서 '올해의 로펌'으로 선정된 데 이어 김재훈 대표변호사가 '올해의 매니징파트너(Managing Partner of the Year)' 상을 받았으며, 세종은 노동(Labour and Employment), 율촌은 조세와 신탁(Tax and Trusts), 화우는 소송(Litigation) 분야에서 '올해의 로펌'으로 선정됐다.
이어 법무법인 대륙아주가 해상(Shipping) 분야 '올해의 로펌'으로 선정되었으며, 2년 전 국제중재와 M&A 부티크로 출범해 해당 분야에서 두각을 나타내고 있는 KL 파트너스가 '올해의 부티크 로펌(Boutique Law Firm of the Year)'으로 선정되어 뜨거운 주목을 받았다. 이날 KL 파트너스를 대표해 상을 받은 김범수 대표변호사는 "2년 전 4명으로 시작해 올 11월 현재 변호사 18명의 규모로 성장했다"며 "높은 전문성과 함께 빠르고 핵심을 찌르는 자문으로 고객들에게 보답하겠다"고 소감을 전했다.
외국 로펌 중에선 피네간(Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner)이 국제 IP(International Intellectual Property) 분야 '올해의 로펌' 상을 받았으며, 허버트 스미스 프리힐즈(Herbert Smith Freehills)는 TMT 분야 '올해의 로펌'에 선정됐다. '올해의 국제 로펌(International Law Firm of the Year)' 상은 M&A와 자본시장 분야에서 높은 실적을 자랑하는 클리어리 가틀립(Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton)이 받았다.
인하우스팀에 대한 시상에선, 한국수출입은행이 금융(Banking and Financial Services) 분야의 인하우스팀으로 선정되었으며, 건설과 중공업(Construction and Heavy Industries)은 현대건설, Retail and Manufacturing은 Continental Korea, TMT는 eBay Korea 인하우스팀이 수상의 영예를 안았다. 또 현대중공업팀이 김앤장이 수여하는 'Kim & Chang Award Korea In-House Team of the Year' 상을 받았으며, 코오롱 인더스트리의 이혜리 변호사가 '올해의 인하우스 로이어(In-House Lawyer of the Year)'로 선정됐다. '올해의 여성변호사(Woman Lawyer of the Year)'엔 알렌앤오베리(Allen & Overy) 서울사무소의 이진영 변호사가 선정됐다.
